Matthew, Session 71
A Special Treat: Before you listen to the lecture on Matthew 16:13-20, I have included clips from the video teachings shot on location at Caesarea Philippi when Bob Gorelik and I took a group of reading to Israel in 2009. There are 3 video clips (now on YouTube). Understanding the geography is critical to understanding this passage. Now you can see it for yourself. Here are the links in order:
Here is my lecture on these verses:

A NOTE ON MATTHEW
One of the live class members asked me to post this:
As a weekly student of Skip Moen’s Matthew class, I would like to suggest that a class such as this is worthy of a fee. The amount of information and the thorough explanation taught by a teacher like Skip would cost several hundred dollars at any institution but we have been blessed to receive it for free. I am suggesting that each listener pay a minimum of $2.00 per class (but I’m sure Skip will accept more). I think we should be grateful for this great gift that God has provided and it should result in a monetary expression that will help Skip continue his service to us.
Humbly submitted,
Amy Gomes

Christine
My bad. I will fix it now. OK, done.
Skip, do you think that the phrase “You are the Messiah, the Son of the Living God” could also be a reference to the prophecy in Hosea (read the entire 1st chapter for context);
[Paul also quotes this in his letter to the Romans:
]
This would have been in line with the disciples expectations that the Messiah ben David would –
a. throw out the Roman oppressors, and
b. regather the outcasts (the dispersed) of Israel.
…Messiah being the first (the first-born, if you like), coming to gather the rest. I know that you’ll get to this eventually, but remember the disciples question just before the Feast of Tabernacles on the “Mount of Transfiguration”? “Master, is it at this time that you will restore the kingdom to Israel?”
As soon as I heard you speak about it the connection seemed obvious to me, but maybe not so to others? What do you think?
What dates in May and June will you be holding the Sunday class? I know you’re out of the country for some of those dates.
Amanda
Due to massive travel, there are no more sessions in May (but be sure to follow the podcast which contains a video of Caesarea Philippi). In June, I will be teaching the Matthew class on the 12th and the 19th. July looks a lot better.
