Be imitators of me, just as I also am of Christ. 1 Corinthians 11:1 NASB

Of me – Of all the people who probably least deserved to hear this exhortation, the Corinthians top the list. Their lives are a mess. They are involved in idolatry, sexual immorality, petty rivalries, family squabbles, lack of compassion and a host of disorderly actions. Most of us would write them off as a lost cause. But then most of us probably couldn’t make Paul’s claim either. “Copy me!”

“Wait, I didn’t mean exactly that. I meant copy me in all those spiritually uplifting things that I do, but don’t look too closely at the rest of my life. There are things that I wouldn’t want you to copy, that even I don’t want to admit are part of my behaviors. Please, just pay attention to my words.” Yes, that sounds more like us. Don’t do a really thorough examination of my life. Just do what I wish I could do.

Paul seems to think that these people who are certainly not spiritually mature need to look at him—carefully—to model their lives on his. That’s a powerful claim, not one that we feel comfortable making. But why is it that we are so hesitant to offer our own lives as examples of godly behavior? Is it because we know ourselves so well that we don’t think we match up? We aren’t like Paul, right? Well, maybe not so right. Isn’t Paul the one who prayed three times to have some serious impediment removed, yet without success? Isn’t he the one who was told that this “messenger from Satan” was a permanent part of his service to the Lord? Didn’t Paul have a real falling out with one of his companions? Didn’t he struggle with absolute commitment? Wasn’t he engaged in resistance to the Messiah for a significant part of his life? Maybe he isn’t so different after all?

The Greek text uses the verb mimeomai. “The group is rare in the LXX and occurs only in the Apocrypha. In general the idea of imitation is alien to the OT and there is no thought of imitating God. The situation changes in the pseudepigrapha, which demand that we imitate exemplary people like Joseph, and also that we imitate God by keeping his commandments. Kings should take God as their example in dealing with their subjects.”[1] Michaelis’ comment is significant. What this means is that Paul is using an idea that originates in the rabbinic period, not in the age of the prophets. Furthermore, because Paul relies on the pseudepigraphic concept, his idea must be distinguished from the use of that verb by Plato. In other words, for Plato and all those influenced by him, life as we know it is not the real life. This life is only a copy, an imitation, of reality, a reality that exists on another plane. Later Christian thinkers adopted this Platonic idea when they spoke of heaven. But Paul is using mimeomai in the rabbinic sense, that is, as an exhortation to literally copy his way of living because he is copying the lifestyle of the Messiah. This involves real earthly decisions and actions. This is not a spiritualized anticipation of another realm. It is living according to instructions given for this age and this world.

Paul is not appealing to the Corinthians to set their eyes on heaven and wait for escape. He is telling them that they are to look at real human examples of godly living and imitate those men and women. Certainly every earthly example will have flaws. Perfection is not an attribute of this world. But holiness is. The Corinthians, despite their problems, have a clear path before them. “Live like me!” says Paul. That raises an important question for each of us. Are we able to confidently exhort others to live like us? Are we walking so carefully that we can point to our own ways of living as examples of the Messiah in action?

Who would you dare to address with the phrase, “Live like I do, and you will draw closer to God.”

I guess Paul is saying “Hey! Walk like me, like a Tzadik!”. Being a righteous person is something we all must try to be. We should be trying hard to walk in HaShem’s ways even if we sometimes fail to do so. Proverbs 24:16a “A righteous person may fall seven times, but he gets up again.”

The closest example I can find is 1st Peter 1.3 it is to know. Him this gives us the idea of reflecting his character Amos 3.7 is the example of a Watchman warning through prophecy what God has said he will do if it doesn’t look like what God has said then don’t trust it. I remember another classic by J. I. Packer knowing God. Discernment is the key God judges the heart do not look on the outward appearances so another concept comes to mind be ye doers of the word and not hearers only. A book’s cover maybe beautiful to see but what is on the inside? Was it Yeshua who said take upon my yoke for it is easy and Light and it is not a burden for you? Speaking of Torah again looking at the lifestyle of the Messiah

carl roberts

It’s not too hard, and our Savior did say “for My yoke is easy, and my burden is light!”. Friend, it is the way of the the transgressor that is hard. So what is our Savior’s solution? “A new commandment I give unto you..” (Commandment #11?] – that you love one another. Love God and love people. All people everywhere – at all times. Difficult? -or impossible? We have been given the mind of Christ…

Seeker

Carl I. Understand this as Jesus reiterating the essence of the ten commandments. Then I for one find not emotions attached to love but respect and fear. Respect to lift up to be best possible in current situation and fear that in failing to assist I can become like the one I fail to assist… What you sow you shall reap principle.
Unless I do not understand love, for once beyond the monkey business we start creating others as we would like to be, for it is only in helping others that we can truly find and help ourselves…
What does it profit to have many children but I cannot save myself…

Seeker, it is impossible to give away that which we do not have. In order to give love, I first must be loved. God has loved me for a very long time (yes, since I was born) but only till later in life did I recognize and/or realize this. But what an eye-opener it is to know God DOES love us! An eternal and enduring love much like that of a Father for his child. ( x 100!)
Love has rightly been defined (IMHO) on this very blog as “Benevolence towards another at cost to myself.” This both defines and displays God’s love towards us – and yes, God’s love was on full display at Calvary.

~ This is love, not that we have loved God but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation [atoning Sacrifice] for our sins ~ (1 John 4.10)

Seeker

Thank you for the response, Carl. If only I could experience what you are referring to I could probably appreciate what you are explaining…
My mind tells me all this is true and all we do helps us experience this love. Maybe Skip is right my indoctrinated view blocks my transformation…

LaVaye Billings

Seeker, I do not know anything about your indoctrinated view or if it blocks your transformation– but this I do know: that when I was forty years old and had been born and raised in a wonderful Godly family and church; I was still seeking even though I never walked away and married a good man, had great children, but when I began to look and seek with all my heart and soul, with intense seeking, and set my face like flint with my responsible job, mothering, caring, cleaning, and gave up all the frills, in due season, the real alive living Creator reached down and immersed me in His Holy spirit, no one could deny it! Now near 84 years old, I am secure and joyful in His peace and love. Daily over and over I try to pass His kindness on to whomever I meet. Keep on seeking with all your heart and soul, giving thanks for every small thing–usually silently. But give big smiles as often as you can. We have to often denied the scriptures on the Holy Spirit.

Seeker

Thank you for the wonderful advise from your personal experience. Here just over half a century I thought I was forever doomed as I can still not experience that deep peace and joy. You have given me hope to continue with my quest and to accept not all is lost, and things will only be lost when I willing stop seeking.

Larry LaRocca

Did not Christ say the same thing? Was that not His oft repeated expectation of the Apostles? I freely offer my life, good and ill, in victory and hard earned lesson as an example to others. Is this not what we are called to do? I learned this at the feet of Christ.

Love is the answer God is love No Greater Love has a man than to lay his life down for another. Also when we lay our life down now we will pick it up in the end. Eternal life is the life our Master lives now through us our hope of glory Christ in US.

Years ago, this verse brought me to question my Christian walk and sent me on a quest to know my Torah-observant Messiah. Also, it is a constant reminder to walk in His ways. When we share our testimony, others can identify with our struggles and victories. There’s no need to be perfect in order to share our lives as an example, as long as we continue pointing towards Messiah. Thanks Skip!

Paul was tormented by an accusing spirit, a messanger, of Satan, to tell him lying, stealing, killing ideas and because of the grace of God, which is sufficient, Paul had everything he needed to colabor with God to get rid of the thing himself using the Name Yeshua.

Brett Weiner B.B.( brother Brett)

I’ve heard it told that all Messengers of Satan are would unclean spirits. Would anyone like to comment or correct me on this so I can speak with more knowledge than what I already know? It helps when we reason together on such matters so we will not be deceived anymore. You will go in my name Yeshua said and you will cast out ( ) what proper translations do we have for what was cast out?
