I Don’t Believe You
But Jesus, on His part, was not entrusting Himself to them, for He knew all men, and because He did not need anyone to testify concerning man, for He Himself knew what was in man. John 2:24-25 NASB
Not entrusting – The NASB translation accidentally hides the fact that the Greek verb here is pisteuo, the same word used by John multiple times for “believe.” In other words, Yeshua did not believe in these men in the same sense that his opponents did not believe in him. Of course, we know that in John’s gospel, pisteuo is never a noun. It is not “belief” in someone or something. It is a verb—the act of believing into. For John, this is the summary verb of paradigm shift. I stop believing, that is, acting, as a result of my current paradigm and I begin acting, that is, believing, as a result of the paradigm represented by the Messiah. My world changes, and my behavior reflects that change. It is not about cognitive assent. It is about what I do!
Now let’s read this verse again. Yeshua did not act in ways that committed himself to the worldview of these men. He did not take on their perspective. He did not join them. He did not express himself according to their way of seeing the world. He didn’t believe into them. Why? Because he knew where their worldview would take him. He knew where they were wrong. He knew what would happen if he adopted their way of living. In other words, he knew their hearts. This does not mean that he had divine insight into their inner spiritual convictions. It means what is obvious. He could see how they acted and, as a result, could draw conclusions about their paradigm. So can we!
Someone comes to you and says, “Why do you keep those Torah commandments? Don’t you know Jesus fulfilled the law? You are falling under Jewish legalism again?” Do you have to have an impartation of the Spirit to know what paradigm such a person has? Of course not! You have the evidence right in front of you. In fact, you don’t even need the speech. If they worship on Sunday, enjoy bacon cheeseburgers, charge interest on non-business loans or plow the field on Shabbat, you can be fairly confident that they have a Greco-Roman Christian paradigm. I am pretty sure that Yeshua would not believe into them. By the way, that doesn’t mean he wouldn’t speak with them. It doesn’t mean he would avoid them. It doesn’t mean he would castigate them. But it does mean he wouldn’t adopt their way of living in the world.
John says that Yeshua “knew what was in man.” The statement is general. Yeshua knew something about human nature. He knew that people are paradigm-dependent. He knew change is the most difficult human task. He knew tradition is often more powerful than text. He knew that what we think we know is usually the greatest roadblock to learning anything. And he knew that men are motivated by self-interest. We know all this too. The question is whether or not we apply what we know about human nature when we deal with others. Yeshua was immune to the need for human approval. He knew who he was and what the Father was asking from him. We are not always so confident. But perhaps we should be. Then we can say, without remorse, “I don’t believe into you.”

This describes exactly where I am today, Skip. We’re it not for this community it would be a very lonely path, and in practical terms it still is. 🙂

LaVaye Billings provided me some wonderful advise on the blog Copy Artist that may be of comfort for you as well…
I do not believe into you… What a statement Skip.
If it is about accepting so that we can commit unto a view… Who was Yeshua talking to or referring to… For this may answer the choice of words.
Here it is about those first believers. Those Yeshua was not willing to make disciples of. As that is His role, to serve others by making the servants. That is still our role today make desciples of…
I have heard this in modern times preachers today use the scriptures or specific excerpts to judge or condemn individuals that do not accept their doctrines. All based on Romans 10 from verse 5, especially verse 14-20.
But I do not think that was the purpose here. Yeshua was saving as per His calling, he was not tasking and that is the message I read in John…
The testing and calling came later. Accepting someone’s convictions is not found in worship and praise. The same message as in the division of the goats and sheep… Not those worshipping, praising and even prophesying/teaching are those Yeshua will reveal himself or his will to, it is those that love and DO his commandments. It is these he entrusted his gospel unto it is these that Yeshua was seeking… Doers not followers of laws and mystic revelations or seekers of miracles…
Hello folks this sounds something Christian apologetics yesterday I asked the question what is apologetics sweet sister mention it is a type of intellectual evangelism used in the way in using the term I apologize for you feel that way. Which a dividing line but in a gentle manner the Messianic Jewish movement still alive and well although there are some cool a different point of view that need to be brought back to the text scripture something else which is alive and well is the one new man movement this also joins the two together it is very interesting the rapid pace this is growing at. They just make it very plain that they do not want to believe with most of the Christian folks I have a question there is something that is called I think in Greek pistols or something like that which means faith in action is this along the lines of this word today?
I started working on this response to a book by George McDonald I read over shabatt. Still not quite finished for my tastte but somehow it seems a fitting contribution to Today’s Word. And thanks Skip for getting to this one as requested.

Swimming against the tide? Standing on the other side of acceptability?
To oneself be true, you alone can be you. Do not act in order to compel the respect of persons you do not yourself respect. Return to the center of things.
Being true is often found outside of respectability. When acceptability is Godless, lawless, or false , it is not worthy of consideration. Be true to ones self. God has created you purposefully, be true to you- his glory to reveal.
“The glory of God is man fully alive”**
One can posses much and not actually exist. Ones true self is discovered in the quest for righteousness, integrity and truth. Sincerely seeking is best, do not fail the test.
A man can know everything and yet be nothing, another can possess nothing yet be present in everything. It is in our being that we inhabit what is real, not in our possessing of things,. In being be it knowledge, wealth or wisdom.
“The love of things dulls the conscience “*
Self seeking desires enslaves one to the object of the quest. God is found in selflessness. The wind of the word does not disturb the soul sheltered in the mind and heart of God.
“Whatever we call religion will vanish when we see God face to face”*
Logic is nothing more than the smoke that rises from the burning of the truth.* Truth is beyond reason and logic as the is sun is beyond the horizon yet burns at the dawn.
An obedient heart who can find? It runs against the grain of culture, cult and societies kind. He who obeys truth shines.

Thank you, Mark. Good words. Question: is “The wind of the word…” really “The wind of the world..”? That is a powerful encourager and I want to remember it correctly.
Hi Leslee, thanks for catching the error yes the hot dry wind of the world can not effect one who drinks from the cool sustaining breeze of the word. I’ll post a link to the finished version for you here later…
Interesting. I sent you an email with some Scripture references concerning keeping the commandments especially those concerning relationships. Aren’t these by far the most important?
Yes. P. S. 37.4. Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart. This song is often overlooked it is spoken from the psalmist and it is also Old Testament old Covenant is it to be overlooked and put aside? I myself don’t think so. Thank you. Caley
Caley a good description of the New Covenant in Jeremiah 31. 31 it is good to explain that God was making a new covenant with the descendants of the one who had the old Covenant in a sense it is the same Covenant but renewed. Thanks for reading the little bit that’s extra blessings I’ll be praying for you also I’m the work that you do.
Mr. Weiner, it appears that you are contradicting yourself? the law does or doesn’t apply?
skip, I sent another email further explaining my scripture references.
